5 Things You Need To STOP Doing

leadership

It is the time of year when people start thinking of all the things they want to start doing for the coming year and making those ‘resolutions’. You know, those things that usually don’t make it through the first week of the new year. Well, here is a list of 5 things you should STOP doing in order to make 2020 an incredible year.

1. Stop waiting until the time is right-

Let’s face it. There is no such thing as “the right time”. Successful people realize that it the right time does not show up on a clock or calendar. They simply determine that the present is the one thing they can control.

If you are the kind of person who is waiting for the ‘right’ thing to happen, you might wait for a long time. It’s like waiting for all the traffic lights to be green for five miles before starting a trip.~Robert Kiyosaki

2. Stop thinking about it-

I recently wrote a separate post about this one topic. While there is plenty of virtue in making an informed decision, the biggest danger lies in not making one at all.

Indecision is a virus that can run through an army and destroy its will to win or even to survive. ~Wendell Mayes

When you are truly considering your options that is great. How many times have you heard someone say something like “Let me think about it for a week or so”? Really? Are they going to truly give it thought for a week? Usually, that is just code for “I can’t make a decision” and at the end of the given timeframe they truly haven’t even given it a second thought. Sadly, too many people go through their entire lives “thinking about it”.

3. Stop the perpetual planning-

Planning and preparation are essential to getting started in the right direction. Constant evaluation and adjustment is as well. The problem starts when the action does not.

Perfectionism hampers success. In fact, it’s often the path to depression, anxiety, addiction, and life-paralysis. ~Brené Brown

Waiting until the plan is perfect is like sitting in your driveway with the car running in park. You can turn the steering wheel all day long, but until you put it in gear and begin moving, your direction will never really change.

4. Stop listening to your excuses-

When I think of excuses, I always picture one of those voices on your shoulder. Unfortunately, the image I get is the one with a forked tail that is holding a pitchfork. It whispers in your ear, but fills you with a false sense of reasoning and justification. I often consider something one of my mentors says often.

The only thing worse than an excuse is a good excuse. ~Paul Martinelli

5. Stop negotiating with your obstacles-

If you desire to challenge the status quo and do something great, you WILL encounter obstacles. Far too many people give up when they run into them and decide “It must not be meant to be”. What a sad mindset to have. That destructive thought has kept far too many people from achieving their potential.

Every basketball fan who loves the game is probably glad that one of the greatest to ever grace a court didn’t give up when he faced obstacles.

If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. ~Michael Jordan
